More smoke. More control. More from your pellet grill.

Pellet grills are convenient, but they often produce a lighter smoke profile and are designed for hot smoking only. Add a Smokai Smoke Generator for a controllable boost of real wood-fired smoke when grilling or switch the grill off and open up an entirely new world of cold smoking.

Control Your Smoke™

Mounted to the outside of your pellet grill, the Smokai Smoke Generator creates smoke independently of your pellet grill, giving you direct control over smoke volume without changing your cooking temperature. Dial it up or down to suit the food, your cook and your taste.

Hot Smoking. More Smoke. More Control.

Run your pellet grill just as you normally would while Smokai adds a controllable boost of fresh, wood-fired smoke. Add a little more smoke to steaks and sausages, or turn it up for brisket, ribs, pork and longer cooks.

Cold Smoking

Turn the pellet grill off and let Smokai provide the smoke. Cold smoke fish, cheese, bacon, butter, peppers, tomatoes and more without firing up the grill or adding cooking heat.

Smokai Modular System™

Invented by our founders in 2011, the modular design makes mounting, assembly, disassembly, ash disposal and cleaning quick. The precision-engineered, heavy-duty components lock together in seconds, so the Smoke Generator comes off the Pellet Grill for cleaning and goes straight back on.

Trusted by the Best

Smokai Smoke Generators are used everyday around the world by home enthusiasts, fishermen, hunters, pit masters, celebrity chefs, artisian smokehouses, butchers, a michelin star smokehouse and many more.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Add your favourite wood variety, turn the pump on and light your Smokai. For hot smoking, run your pellet grill as normal while Smokai adds an independently controlled source of wood-fired smoke. For cold smoking, leave the pellet grill off and let Smokai provide the smoke.

  • Pellet grills are excellent at maintaining consistent cooking temperatures, but smoke production can be relatively light and is tied to the grill's combustion cycle. Smokai gives you a separate, controllable source of smoke, allowing you to add as much or as little as you want.

  • A Smokai Smoke Generator can be fitted to almost any pellet grill. Installation requirements vary depending on the grill's construction and airflow, so mounting position and venting are important.

  • The best Smoke Generator depends on the size of your pellet grill, how much smoke you want to produce and how long you are smoking for. Use our Product Selector to find the best Smokai setup for your grill.

Installing Your Smokai

RATED 4.9 BY SMOKERS WORLDWIDE

Adding the Smokai smoke generator completely changed the game. Performance & Smoke Output: The difference is night and day. The Smokai pumps out thick, clean smoke right from the start and gives cold smoke and low-and-slow cooks the intense flavor profile that pellet grills normally lack. You finally get that true smoke ring and deep flavor on bigger cuts like brisket and pork shoulder.

Installed it on my Recteq 1250..... it works great on my grill. I smoked two racks of baby back ribs shortly after my install. My ribs were stellar, awesome smoke ring and flavor. Very happy with my purchase!

Using this to supplement the smoke in my pellet grill a Weber Searwood XL 600. Generates plenty of smoke, can easily adapt to my propane grill, making it very versatile.

Wow what a huge difference in the smoke taste! Just videos of testing after installing and warming up. This smoke turns into a more thin blue smoke after running for about a half hour with pellets. I prefer running wood chips as the taste gets even better. This thing is priceless, well made, and easy to get started. I'll be getting the 3L Magnum eventually. Thank you for such an awesome product!

Our philosophy

SMOKE EQUALS FLAVOR

Smokai’s product philosophy is simple: design the worlds best Smoke Generators and Accessories that give people control over natural wood-fired smoke that delivers authentic smokehouse flavour.

Every product is purposefully engineered using robust materials, modular construction and practical details that make it easy to use, maintain and adapt to different smoking setups. No unnecessary complexity. No disposable design. No gimmicks. Just dependable, beautifully made equipment built to perform season after season.

  • The Smoke Generator runs on 1/16 to 3/8 in (2 to 10 mm) wood chips, or 100% hardwood BBQ pellets (with no binders or additives), available from most BBQ stockists.

The gravity-fed design and controlled airflow convert that wood into smoke at the rate you set. Exact run time depends on your output setting, your wood (chips burn faster than pellets), wood variety and conditions.

Whatever you load, you’re measuring smoke in hours, not minutes.

  • Because we're relentless about quality: the materials, the component manufacturing, the quality control, the testing, the performance. Keeping production in our New Zealand factory is what lets us hold that standard at every step.

It shows in the details. Certified, heavy-duty 304L stainless steel, milled into tube on site to AS 1528.1, the standard for stainless steel tube in food processing and other hygienic applications. Every Smoke Generator passes through multiple checks at a tube manufacturing level, component production level, again as a completed assembly, and is then delivered assembled.

Even the few parts that we have to source offshore from the most reputable manufacturers are held to the same bar: air pumps custom-built to our specification to match the Smoke Generator, and independently certified high-temperature, food-safe silicone tube to feed the air to the burn.

We've built them this way since 2011. We do things right or not at all.

  • Smokai Smoke Generators are designed to use 100% hardwood BBQ pellets or natural hardwood wood chip between 2–10 mm in size. Wood chip should be dry, graded to the correct size and free from dust.

When using pellets, only use 100% natural hardwood pellets with no added binders, oils, fillers or artificial flavourings. Avoid pellets containing these additives, including products such as Traeger pellets that use soy oil in their manufacturing process.

  • No. The Smoke Generator mounts on the outside of your Pellet Grill. Only the smoke outlet enters the grill, so your cooking surface stays free for food.

A Smokai Smoke Generator adds smoke to your Pellet Grill without taking anything away from it.

  • Pellet grills use fan-driven airflow when hot smoking.

If you plan to use the smoke generator for hot smoking as well as cold smoking your food, mount the Smoke Generator on the same side as the fan where possible, or in a position where the grill’s airflow is not directed straight against the Smoke Generator smoke outlet.

For hot smoking, run the Smokai air pump on its highest setting and keep the pellet grill’s chimney or vents open so smoke can travel freely through the cooking chamber.

The result is simple: your pellet grill controls the heat, while Smokai gives you control over the smoke.

  • Yes. This is one of the biggest advantages of adding a Smokai Smoke Generator.

Pellet grills create smoke by burning pellets in the fire pot, which also creates heat. A Smokai Smoke Generator produces smoke independently, so you can leave the pellet grill switched off and use the cooking chamber purely as a smoking cabinet.

That opens up a completely different side of smoking. From cheese and fish to bacon, butter, peppers, salt and more.

  • Absolutely. A Smokai Smoke Generator doesn’t have to be tied to one chamber.

It generates a controlled wood-fired smoke and delivers it into a suitable smoking chamber. That means you can move it between compatible grills, smokers, cabinets, smokehouses and other suitable chambers.

One Smoke Generator. Multiple smoking setups. Far more ways to smoke.

WHICH SMOKE GENERATOR IS THE RIGHT SIZE FOR ME?

Your ideal Smoke Generator size depends on what you’re smoking, whether you’re hot or cold smoking, the chamber you’re working with and your typical smoking time.

Meet Tony, the man behind the brand

THE HARD YARDS DESERVE A REWARD

Earned on the water, up in the hills, or from a walk down to the local store and back. That effort should end in something worth remembering. Raw ingredients turned into smoked food that gets eaten, shared, and talked about long after the plate's empty.

That's where Smokai started. I'm a fisherman and a hunter, and smoking is still the best way I know to serve up your hard-fought fish or game or a good cut from the butcher. In 2010, we invented the first Smokai Smoke Generator: modular, stainless steel, built to last. All these year later, that design remains largely unchanged.

Our mission is to put the right tools, woods, resources and knowledge in your hands, so you get legendary results every time you cold or hot smoke your fish, meat or any other suitable food.

We do the lot ourselves, start to finish, in New Zealand. We're a bit obsessed with quality. Compare our gear to anything else and you'll see it.

Today Smokai has shipped to over 65 countries and is used daily by backyard smokers, pit masters, chefs, butchers and artisan smokehouses. Same passion behind it. Same respect for what nature provides.

Because legendary flavour begins with quality smoke.

Cheers, Tony
